Frequently asked questions
Can any student join Vamos programs?
Vamos participants are enrolled based on our priority of service criteria which prioritizes students that are Latine, Migrant, Multilingual, Newcomer, and/or low-income families. Students are also enrolled based on referrals we receive from schools and local community members. If you’re interested in enrolling a Latine student or know of a family in need of support please contact us.
How does Vamos fund their programs?
Our programs have different sources of funding, which might include grants, contracts with school districts, and donations. Through our partnerships with local organizations, we also receive services such as instruction, equipment, and space for activities as in-kind donations. Some programs are fully funded and others require us to fundraise in order to cover not only the cost of programming but operations expenses such as our office space, administration work, marketing, and others.
How can I partner with Vamos?
Vamos partners with different local educational and outdoor organizations that make it possible for us to run our programs. If you are interested in providing your services or support to Vamos please see how to get involved here.
Where does the money go when I donate to your organization?
Unless we’re fundraising money to fund a specific program, all donations received go to any significant gap in funding that we consider needs to be addressed the most. This might entail the cost of programming, operation expenses, or others. If you would like to receive more specific information on how your donation is being invested please contact us.
How can I volunteer with Vamos?
Vamos relies on the support of volunteers to run after-school programs. We assign volunteers to a program that matches their skills, interests, and availability. The time commitment usually involves supporting a program once a week for a period of three or four weeks. We also welcome capacity builder volunteers who are interested in providing their knowledge or services to help with Vamos development. We value volunteers that are committed and passionate about supporting our mission. If you’re interested please contact us through our Take Action page.
Do I need to speak Spanish to work at Vamos?
While speaking Spanish is not a requirement to work at Vamos, it is a preferred qualification. Vamos serves Spanish-speaking youth and families, and being able to communicate effectively in their primary language enhances the level of support Vamos mentors can provide. Vamos also serves families who speak Mixteco, Nahuatl, Triqui, and other Indigenous languages. Vamos is looking for staff that can communicate in those languages. However, not speaking Spanish should not be a barrier to applying. Other skills such as experience working with youth, passion for building community, cultural awareness, and others are important to us as well!
